Committee on International Relations and Emigrants, the Committee on European Integration and the Montenegro - Germany parliamentary Friendship Group held a joint meeting with Chairperson of the Committee on the Affairs of the European Union of the German Bundestag Mr Gunther Krichbaum.
MP Gunther Krichbaum conveyed a clear message that Germany strongly supported the idea that the Western Balkans should join the European Union. He assessed that bilateral relations between Montenegro and the Federal Republic of Germany were friendly. Mr Krichbaum particularly stressed the quality of reforms, and encouraged the continuation of efforts aimed at strengthening the rule of law, which is a foundation for building better future of the overall society.
Vice President of the Parliament of Montenegro Mr Genci Nimanbegu, in his capacity of Chair of the Friendship Group with Germany, said that we were encouraged and happy because Germany remained devoted to the idea that Montenegro should be a part of the EU, emphasising that the Western Balkans was still a region that needed attention and help of its European partners, particularly of Germany.
During the meeting, a special attention was devoted to the improvement of all aspects of cooperation through friendship groups as a special parliamentary mechanism but also through cooperation of Montenegrin and German working bodies, which should be used as an additional incentive in establishing bilateral relations.
Montenegrin parliamentarians expressed gratitude for the previous expert help in the European integration process provided to Montenegro by Germany in numerous fields, particularly in the field of the strengthening of the rule of law.
Member of the Committee on European Integration Ms Marija Maja Ćatović thanked Germany for their support with regard to Montenegro’s integration to the EU as well as for their contribution to our membership of NATO, and stressed the importance of parliamentary cooperation and communication at multilateral meetings such as COSAC. Ms Ćatović said, among other things, that it was not enough to pass and adopt laws only, but that their proper implementation was much more important, emphasising the need for closer cooperation between Montenegro and Germany when it comes to chapters 23 and 24.
Visit by the Chairperson of the Committee on the Affairs of the European Union of the German Bundestag was jointly assessed as an important incentive and confirmation of Germany’s devotion to Montenegro’s European perspective, in this very important political moment.
