Minister Meleșcanu: future of the countries of the Western Balkans is in the European Union

Excellent bilateral relations between Montenegro and Romania should be continually upgraded, and parliamentary cooperation should play a special role in this – it was concluded today at the meeting of the President of the Parliament of Montenegro, Mr Ivan Brajović and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Romania, Mr Teodor Meleșcanu.

President Brajović stressed Montenegro's commitment to EU membership and expressed the expectation that Montenegro would not lack Romania's full support and assistance to the enlargement process and European integration.

Pointing out that Romania appreciated the efforts that Montenegro has been investing in the process of European integration, Minister Meleșcanu expressed full support for the individual progress of the candidates, i.e. the principle that the performance of each state should be measured on the basis of its individual achievements and the ability to fulfill the criteria for membership. Minister of Foreign Affairs of Romania stressed that the future of the Western Balkan countries was in the European Union and that the enlargement policy would be high on the agenda during the presidency of Romania of the Council of Europe in the first half of 2019.

The interlocutors noted that there was a significant space for further improvement of cooperation between the two countries in the field of economy, culture and education. Opinions on current political developments in both countries and the region have also been exchanged.
