Upon the invitation of President of the Parliament Mr Ivan Brajović, a consultative meeting of presidents of parliamentary political parties about presidential elections, that will be called for on Friday - 19 January, was held today in the Parliament of Montenegro.
The meeting was attended by presidents of the ruling parliamentary political parties: Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) Mr Milo Đukanović, Bosniak Party Mr Rafet Husović, Croatian Civic Initiative (HGI) Ms Marija Vučinović, New Democratic Power – FORCA Mr Nazif Cungu, Democratic Union of Albanians (DUA) Mr Mehmet Zenka, Albanian Alternative
Mr Gjergj Camaj and Liberal Party Mr Andrija Popović.
The meeting discussed the conditions and circumstances under which the upcoming presidential elections will be held. The interlocutors assessed as significant the fact that the Parliament of Montenegro, through the adopted laws and the implementation of the OSCE recommendations, has furtherly improved the electoral conditions, and therefore the environment in which the elections will take place.
They estimated that today's meeting is another indicator of the responsibility and mature approach of relevant political subjects to the issues of interest for the state and its citizens. It was also noted that in the past year, after the parliamentary elections, the state strengthened the legal and political system that threatened to be shaken by some internal and external entities.
Party leaders have taken a unique position to lead positive campaigns and they will not in any way contribute to the rise of tensions.
After the meeting, the President of the Parliament addressed the media and said that he would call for the elections on Friday, 19 January, when he would also announce the date of their holding.
President Brajović said that all relevant political entities that show a responsible approach to the important issues of this society were at the meeting today. He noted that the absence of the opposition from today's meeting was a clear sign of serious difficulties, primarily in the mutual communication of the opposition, which cannot schedule a joint meeting, so there was no realistic expectation that they would come to consultations about presidential elections and face the arguments and the ruling majority.
- On the other hand, we are doing the job for which the citizens elected us, we protect the Constitution and the state - Mr Brajović said.
The President of the Parliament also said that today talks were held with representatives of the international election monitoring organisation (ODIHR) and that on the basis of concrete indicators it is quite clear that the state authorities did everything that was required to make the election environment even better and more transparent, and that the electoral conditions are the same for everyone.
