Mr Brajović - Ms McCluney: Gender equality is a responsibility of the whole society

At the meeting, President of the Parliament of Montenegro Mr Ivan Brajović and UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative for Montenegro Ms Fiona McCluney discussed the achievements of the Parliament of Montenegro in relation to gender equality.

 

At the meeting, they also discussed the upcoming regional conference “Advancing the Gender Equality Agenda in the Western Balkans and Turkey”, where the President of the Parliament of Montenegro will deliver a speech.

President Brajović informed Coordinator McCluney on constant increase of a number of female MPs in the Montenegrin Parliament as well as on the set of laws providing support to women to participate more actively in political and social life of Montenegro. An important strategic document in this field is the Action Plan for Achieving Gender Equality 2013-2017, which has already given positive results.

- I believe that the role of the parliament in providing gender and every other equality is very important, as well as the role of the whole society and every citizens individually, Mr Brajović emphasised.

At the meeting they also discussed numerous possibilities for improving cooperation between the Parliament of Montenegro and UN Office in our country. Coordinator McCluney voiced readiness for providing expert help and sharing experiences in the fields of interest for the development of the Montenegrin society.

In addition, they concluded that the process of joining the European Union was a unique opportunity for improving the protection of women’s right and achieving gender equality, which was also addressed in the Resolution of the European Parliament of 21 May 2013 on women’s right in the Balkan candidate countries as well as in the Report of the European Parliament on Beijing Platform for Action +20.
