President of the Parliament of Montenegro Mr Ivan Brajović has met President of the Bundestag Mr Wolfgang Schäuble. In a longer conversation, the interlocutors exchanged views on numerous issues of interest for the future of Montenegro and the European Union. They also spoke about strengthening of bilateral cooperation with emphasis on the role of parliaments in diplomatic and economic relations between Germany and Montenegro. Mr Brajović used this opportunity to remind of the achievements of Montenegro since his first meeting with President Schäuble nine years ago, when both served as ministers of interior in their countries. The President of the Parliament emphasised that our country would continue to intensify reform processes after the completion of the election cycle, whose results have confirmed the citizens' commitment to the European path of Montenegro. After the meeting, the President of the Bundestag said:
- This was a good meeting between the two presidents, and we met on the occasion of the of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly session. This was a good opportunity to continue the bilateral relations between our two parliaments. We had an intensive discussion not only about the situation in our countries, but especially about the issues that are being raised on the path of Montenegro's membership in the EU. I am grateful for this opportunity and I think this was a good conversation.
On his conversation with the President Bundestag, the President of the Parliament said:
- I had the opportunity to share the mutual satisfaction with good relations of our parliaments. It is important to raise the intensity of our relations, and, by establishing the friendship group we have made basic preconditions. I am sure that in the continuation of our European path, we will have strong support in Germany as we had during the NATO integration process. I also hope that together we will celebrate the moment when Montenegro becomes the first next member of the European Union.
In his address during the OSCE PA session on the topic “Implementing OSCE Commitments: The Role of Parliaments”, President Brajovć said that parliaments had an important role in implementing and promoting of the core values:
- The parliaments are institutions where all crucial state issues should be discussed, debated, and solved. Strong institutions are guardians of democracy. That’s why we all have to be continuously committed to strengthening of the institutions and trust of citizens in their work. Parliaments have to improve continuously their legislative and control role, and in that manner directly justify the legitimacy resulting from direct election by citizens.
Speaking of Montenegro, Mr Brajović said that we in Montenegro are convinced that the direction that we have been following for the last 12 years, since the renewal of our independence, is based precisely on the values of solidarity, dialogue, and respect of diversities – which are the greatest value of a civic, multi-ethnic and multi-confessional Montenegro The President of the Parliament also said that we were looking forward to the fact that finally all actors of political scene were becoming aware of their responsibility towards voters, and that the dialogue was being returned to the only place where it belongs – the Parliament.
During the continuation of OSCE PA session, the President of the Parliament also met OSCE Secretary General Mr Thomas Greminger, Head of the UK Delegation to the OSCE PA Mark Pritchard, President of the Parliamentary group for the South Eastern Europe in the Bundestag Mr Josip Juratović and other EU officials.
In addition to President Brajović, the Delegation of the Parliament in Berlin consists of parliamentarians Mr Aleksandra Vuković and Mr Nikola Rakočević.
