President of the Parliament attends the ratification of the NATO Accession Protocol in Luxembourg

President Brajović met President of the Luxembourgish Chamber of Deputies and high officials of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly

The Luxembourgish Chamber of Deputies has ratified the NATO Accession Protocol for Montenegro, by a majority of votes, 55 of 60 votes in favour. Luxembourg is the 17th county that has supported Montenegro’s membership of NATO.

President of the Parliament Mr Ivan Brajović attended the vote. Prior to that, he met President of the Luxembourgish Chamber of Deputies Mr Mars Di Bartolomeo and high officials of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly as well.

After meetings with the officials and the sitting of the Parliament, presidents Brajović and Di Bartolomeo delivered press statements:

Mr Brajović: “Today I had several important meetings, with the President of the Luxembourgish Chamber of Deputies and high officials of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly. We have agreed that the ratification process is going exceedingly well, which means approaching permanent stability for Montenegro. Euro-Atlantic integration, which refers to both - opening of negotiation chapters and process of ratification of the Protocol, are confirmation of the clear pro-west orientation of Montenegro towards the values of countries with highly developed democracies. The ratification and meetings in the Luxembourgish Parliament were the opportunity to discuss the intensification of cooperation of our parliaments. I invited my host to visit Montenegro, particularly due to the fact that our parliaments haven’t had significant joint activities during the recent years”. I expect that the visit will be arranged in the following months and I am looking forward to the high guests from Luxembourg”, President Brajović said.

President of the Luxembourgish Chamber of Deputies Mr Mars Di Bartolomeo voiced pleasure by the vote in favour of Montenegro’s membership of NATO, particularly emphasising the similarity of the two states. President Bartolomeo stressed the significant presence and active contribution of Montenegrin emigrants to the overall Luxembourgish society.

Chairperson of the Committee on Foreign and European Affairs and Treasurer of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly Mr Marc Angel delivered a press statement after the meeting with President Brajović:

- Montenegro is on a good path of European and Euro-Atlantic integration. Today’s ratification is another step towards the Alliance. We follow very attentively Montenegro’s path towards the EU and we will help you a lot in this regard. You will be a member of NATO soon, and you are one step away from the European Union. For me, Europe is not only economic but also peaceful project, therefore it is important for us to work on our unity. We are a small continent, and in the era of globalization, there is no other way, especially for small countries, but to work together. That is experience of our country - Luxembourg. We are pleased that another small country comes to our family”, Mr Angel said.

The visits to Luxembourg was an opportunity for the meeting of the President of the Parliament of Montenegro and representatives of Montenegrin diaspora in the Benelux countries.

The ratification of the Protocol by the Belgian Parliament is expected on Thursday.
