Belgium ratifies the NATO Accession Protocol for Montenegro

The Belgian Parliament has just ratified the NATO Accession Protocol for Montenegro. 101 MPs voted “for”, 2 “against” and 15 “abstained”.

During the day, President of the Parliament of Montenegro Mr Ivan Brajović spoke with Mr Siegfried Bracke, President of the Belgian Chamber of Representatives. Presidents Brajović and Bracke spoke about the importance of the Euro Atlantic integration of Montenegro and support of member states on that path.

- Montenegro and Belgium have an excellent bilateral cooperation, and Belgium is a state which strongly supports the Euro Atlantic integration of our state. I would like to remind that Montenegro gained a candidate status during Belgian presidency in 2010. When it comes to NATO integration, I thanked to Mr Bracke for the intensive activities of the Belgian Parliament in implementing the procedure at the plenum and at the responsible committee, in order to place the ratification process for vote today, Mr Brajović said.

Mr Siegfried Bracke, President of the Belgian Chamber of Representatives, said, among other things, that Montenegro was an important shackle in the NATO security system.

- We have a common interest, we share the same values, we are friends and we need a security chain in this world of great changes. This is a stepping stone for Montenegro’s joining to the European Union, President Bracke said.

An official invitation letter was delivered to President Bracke, to visit Montenegro for the first time and be a guest of our Parliament, possibly in the first quarter of the next year.

The President of the Montenegrin Parliament today also met Mr David Geerts, President of the Montenegrin and Belgian Parliamentary Friendship Group. Mr Geerts said that, regardless of their political differences, Belgian MPs from majority and opposition work together smoothly.

- It is not good that the opposition is not in the Parliament while discussions are led, because they have been elected to do their job. It is important to have an opposition in a parliament, because that is the only way to hear about their different opinion, Mr Geerts said.

It was announced that Delegation of the Montenegrin Parliament belonging to the Montenegrin and Belgian Parliamentary Friendship Group would visit their Belgium colleagues.
