Meeting of President Brajović with the ambassadors of the EU member states

President of the Parliament of Montenegro Mr Ivan Brajović today met with the ambassadors of the European Union member states to Montenegro. The gathering was hosted by Head of the EU Delegation to Montenegro Mr Aivo Orav and Ambassador of the Republic of Slovakia, presiding EU country, Mr Roman Hloben. As Mr Hloben said, today’s meeting is the last meeting with the ambassadors of the European Union in Podgorica under the Slovak presidency of the EU.

The meeting was also attended by vice president of the Parliament Mr Branimir Gvozdenović and Mr Genci Nimanbegu.

In his opening address to the ambassadors, President Brajović said that integration processes were not just mere commitments on paper, nor the motive for their implementation was only political one. He emphasised that the most important thing for Montenegro on that path was the adoption of the European values.

- In the 21st century Montenegro should serve as an example for the whole region. With its example, work, commitment, values, Montenegro must write out new pages of the whole region’s history, enabling the active integration of all countries of the region into the European mainstream. It is not and it will not be an easy task.

Speaking on the boycott of the Parliament by the opposition, Mr Brajović stressed out:

- Boycott of Parliament by the opposition, which is based on non-recognition of the election results, to some extent threatens the political environment and the achieved stability and democratic standards in Montenegro. We are determined to ensure the presence of all members of parliament, by cooperating with all relevant political stakeholders. The Parliament has to work much more efficiently, and I am sure MPs will support me in my effort to perform our job absolutely professionally, responsibly and efficiently.

In his statement after the meeting, Ambassador of the Republic of Slovakia Mr Roman Hloben said that the debate was sincere, open and concreate.

- We talked, among other things, about the return of the opposition in the Parliament and the role of the Parliament in the process of Euro Atlantic integration. We concluded that a constructive political dialogue is the only way to resolve all outstanding issues, Ambassador Hloben said.

Mr Brajović:

- Integration processes are of great importance for us. I believe that Montenegro can contribute to its important partners by its specifics and experiences. In this mutual giving, I believe that both sides benefit. I informed the ambassadors about priorities in the work of the Parliament as well as about developments regarding the boycott by the opposition. I also informed them that almost 95% of MPs have established MP groups, i.e. only five MPs do not belong to MP groups. Citizens gave us their trust to represent them in Parliament, and to present our views through parliamentary debate, President of the Parliament of Montenegro Mr Ivan Brajović concluded
