EU enlargement is not a favour to the countries but an additional value

President of the Parliament of Montenegro Mr Ivan Brajović, who is paying a two-day working visit to the Republic of Italy, on the occasion of the adoption of the NATO Accession Protocol for Montenegro, has met in Rome today Deputy Foreign Minister Mr Vincenzo Amendola and senators - Mr Pier Ferdinando Casini , Chairperson of the Senate’s Committee on Foreign Policy and Emigration, Mr Vannino Chiti, Chairperson of the Committee on European Union Policies and Mr Aldo Di Biagio and Mr Stefano Collina, members of the Friendship group with Montenegro in the Italian Senate.

During the talk with Mr Amendola, President of the Parliament Mr Brajović thanked to Italy for their consistent support regarding Montenegro’s European and Euro-Atlantic integration, and expressed satisfaction by the adoption of the NATO Accession Protocol for Montenegro.

Membership of NATO is a key foreign policy goal of Montenegro, whose achievement has a crucial significance for security of the state and its citizens, and is a prerequisite for further economic development, Mr Brajović said.

During the meeting, they emphasised the importance of the successful continuation of the European path of Montenegro and the region, and suggested that, apart from member states, candidate countries should be present at the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome. President Brajović assessed as very important the fact that Italy will host the 2017 Western Balkans Summit within Berlin Process, that will take place in Trieste in July, as well as the appointment of a special envoy of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the said conference Mr Michael Giacomelli, who will visit Montenegro soon.

They agreed on joint activities in organising pre-conference in Montenegro in order to define priorities and key topics for the conference in Trieste. They emphasised the role of speakers of the Western Balkan countries within Berlin Process.

Mr Amendola said that Italy will continue to strongly support Montenegro and other Western Balkan countries on their European and Euro-Atlantic path, as EU enlargement is not a favour to the countries of the region but an additional value for the European Union and its strengthening.

- In this regard, it is expected that Europe will have a qualitative leap as well as clear strategies for further development and resect of all principles and values, along with openness to dialogue with everyone. These are messages that Italy will represent during its presidency of the G7, as well as in the framework of the UN Security Council, Mr Amandola said, thanking for the support that Montenegro gave to the Italian candidacy for membership of this important UN body.

He expressed the willingness of Italy to continue strengthening economic ties with Montenegro and the region, through better energy and infrastructure connectivity, as well as through common regional market.

During the meeting with the Italian senators, the participants discussed topics in the field of parliamentary cooperation and models that can improve and further develop inter-parliamentary relations, which is of particular importance for the process of integration of our country in the EU and NATO.

The interlocutors agreed that Montenegro and Italy had excellent level of overall relations, and pointed out that there was virtually no area where meaningful cooperation was not achieved, as evidenced by numerous agreements signed and initiatives implemented. In particular, they discussed the cooperation in the economic field and expressed their willingness to further improve the traditionally good bilateral relations.

The conversation was an opportunity to exchange opinions on internal political developments in both countries, as well as on issues of regional and global importance.

Mr Pier Ferdinando Casini, Chairperson of the Senate’s Committee on Foreign Policy and Emigration, said:

- It is important to strengthen relations between Italy and Montenegro. Relations are already great, and we greatly appreciate the achieved level of cooperation between the parliaments. The parliaments of Montenegro and Italy will continue to cooperate. The goals are the same: European Union, accession to NATO and harmony between the two countries, all of which contributes to the stability of the Mediterranean.
