President of the Parliament of Montenegro Mr Ivan Brajović spoke with UN Secretary General Mr António Guterres today in New York.
Expressing his satisfaction with the opportunity to talk, President Brajović said that Montenegro appreciated the partnership with the United Nations. He stressed that Montenegro is committed to the fundamental values of the United Nations and that as a civil and secular state it is a safe home for all its citizens. Speaking about the region, President Brajović reiterated the importance of maintaining regional stability and the need for full integration of the Western Balkans into the EU, as a prerequisite for the accelerated progress of the region. He added that a stronger United Nations presence was important, especially in projects aimed at strengthening democratic processes.
UN Secretary General Mr António Guterres emphasised the importance of cooperation between the UN and Montenegro, the later playing an important role in the region.
He expressed his belief that 2020 will be successful in terms of enlargement, bearing in mind that the European officials confirmed that the Western Balkans would be one of priorities.
“Rest assured that UN is interested on supporting the integration of both - Montenegro and the rest of the Western Balkan countries, because we want the stable and prosperous region” - Mr Guterres said. He stressed that the United Nations are at disposal to Montenegro in all areas with potential for stronger cooperation.
