President of the Parliament meets with Ambassador of Serbia

President of the Parliament of Montenegro, Mr Ivan Brajović, hosted today for an inaugural visit the newly appointed Ambassador of the Republic of Serbia to Montenegro, Mr Vladimir Božović.

President Brajović wished the Ambassador a successful mandate, expressing his belief that through the diplomatic engagement he would contribute for the relations between the two countries to reach a level of mutual understanding and respect. He emphasised that Montenegro has been committed to developing good neighbourly relations with all the countries of the region with which it has built cooperation based on the interests of citizens, the economic and geographical orientation to each other. He stressed that following the adoption of the Law on Freedom of Religion or Belief and the legal status of religious communities, there has been many undeliberate statements, but that the two countries in the further process of European integration through cooperation and mutual respect should overcome all misunderstandings. Referring to the enlargement policy, President Brajović stated that the accession to the European Union in the foreign policy context has represented the Montenegro's priority and that it would continue to provide Serbia with full support on that journey.

During the conversation, President Brajović expressed satisfaction with the excellent parliamentary cooperation that has contributed to further building of relations between the two countries.

Ambassador Božović conveyed to the President Brajović the greetings of the officials of the Republic of Serbia, first of all the Speaker of the National Assembly, Ms Maja Gojković. The official visit of the President Brajović to Belgrade in 2017 he assessed as one of the most successful visits by parliament speakers. The Ambassador informed the President that during his term of office he would devote himself to improving the political, economic, agricultural and cultural relations of the two countries. Commenting on the adoption of the Law on Freedom of Religion or Belief and the legal status of religious communities, Ambassador Božović said that he believed that the dialogue would lead to results and way out of the situation, assessing that there was room for overcoming differences.

″The Republic of Serbia has not interfered, nor will interfere with the internal affairs of Montenegro, which it considers to be the closest country to wish to have the best possible relations with, based on mutual respect. Montenegro is a sovereign, independent and the country that regulates and conducts its foreign and domestic policies and is respected and appreciated by the Republic of Serbia″, the Ambassador Božović concluded.
