A consultative meeting of presidents of the parliamentary parties was held in the Parliament of Montenegro, upon the invitation of President of the Parliament Mr Ivan Brajović.
Aside from President of the Parliament and of the Socialdemocrats Mr Ivan Brajović, the meeting was attended by the following: Mr Milo Đukanović, President of the Democratic Party of Socialists, Mr Rafet Husović, President of the Bosniak Party, Mr Andrija Popović, President of the Liberal Party of Montenegro, Mr Nazif Cungu, President of the New Democratic Power – FORCA, Mr Nik Gjeloshaj, President of the Albanian Alternative, Mr Adrijan Vuksanović, Croatian Civic Initiative as well as Ms Hatixhe Gjoni, Vice President of the Democratic Union. Also, vice presidents of the Parliament also attended in the meeting Mr Branimir Gvozdenović and Mr Genci Nimanbegu.
The meeting was called ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections with the intention of providing an opportunity to all participants of the political life to give their contribution to greater transparency of the overall election process and to always desirable improvement of the electoral climate, by honouring international standards and best democratic practice. The meeting discussed the activities needed ahead of the parliamentary elections, in order to maintain and further strengthen the trust of citizens in the election process by considering the proposals and their possible adoption.
On this occasion, President Brajović reminded that he had sent, at the beginning of May, an invitation for the observation mission deployments to the European Parliament, OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, ODIHR and PACE. The meeting also discussed the fact that the most prominent international observation missions had assessed Montenegrin elections as being held in democratic environment, while, after that last parliamentary and presidential elections, all recommendations were adopted, except those which demanded the opposition support.
On behalf of their parties, the attendees showed openness for a dialogue exclusively within the institutions of the system, expecting the same from all other political stakeholders. They concluded that conditioning by any legal acts or other documents did not represent a good basis for constructive talks on improving the electoral climate, declaratively advocated by parties that are allegedly not satisfied with the election conditions. The participants agreed that, while following the epidemiological situation and recommendations of the responsible health institutions, as well as the need for focusing on the state economy, the optimal dates for holding regular parliamentary and part of local elections within the legal deadline should be considered, with an open invitation to all responsible political entities to participate in these discussions on the conditions and date of the elections.
