The Netherlands will soon end formal procedure of support to Montenegro towards NATO membership

At the meeting of the President of the Parliament of Montenegro, Mr Ivan Brajović, with the President of the Senate of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Ms Ankie Broekers-Knol, within the frameworks of the Conference of Speakers of the EU Parliaments, that is held in Bratislava, bilateral relations between the two countries were assesed as excellent, accentuating the continuous support of the Netherlands to achieving strategic foreign policy goals of Montenegro - membership to the NATO and the European Union.

President Brajović thanked the Netherlands for their commitment in the process of ratification of the Protocol on NATO membership, which was adopted at the Senate by acclamation on 21 March and expressed satisfaction with the broad support and formal completion of the constitutional procedure in the Netherlands.

Interlocutors pointed out that the membership of Montenegro to NATO was important for long-term regional stability as well and guidance of the entire region of the Western Balkans to the societies and communities of western values. They also discussed best practices of the Netherlands and their application in Montenegro in the field of strengthening the rule of law, support to minorities and vulnerable groups of citizens, as well as the possibilities of strengthening economic cooperation.

President of the Senate of the Netherlands said that Montenegro would soon become a member of NATO whic was a very important step. President Broekers-Knol confirmed the position of the Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs as well, who after his recent visit to Montenegro also made very positive observations on Montenegro's progress towards the European Union.

She stated the following after ending the meeting with the President of the Parliament of Montenegro, Mr Ivan Brajović:

- The ratification process in the Netherlands was concluded on 21 March. The United States was one of the last countries to say "yes". There is Spain left to confirm Montenegro's membership to NATO and I hope that it would be completed as soon as possible, so that Montenegro would soon become member, which is a very important step. Mr. Brajović mentioned how important the membership in the European Union was to Montenegro, and our Minister of Foreign Affairs said that Montenegro was making good progress on the way. It is about the process that lasts for a certain period, there are many steps that must be taken in this way. Montenegro is doing a very good job, President of the Senate, Ms Ankie Broekers-Knol said.

During the second day of the Conference in the capital of Slovakia, President Brajović will meet with the President of the European Parliament, Mr Antonio Tajani, presidents of parliaments of Slovakia, the Netherlands, Estonia and Slovenia, as well as with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Slovakia, Mr Miroslav Lajčak.
