Speaking about the security of the Western Balkans, as a region that is firmly linked to the European security complex, but also about the new security challenges and the ways in which they can be overcome by mutual cooperation, President Brajović emphasised that today, more than ever before, revitalisation of common values is needed, as well as solidarity and the idea of European unity, taking into account at the same time the particularities and specific historical experiences of each state individually.
He indicated that Montenegro, bearing in mind its historical path, has unfortunately often come, in a hard way, to the realisation that only by preserving value, tradition, concerned about itself, but strongly cooperating with neighbors and being open towards new ideas, could preserve civil, multinational and multiconfessional character of the country, which represented its greatest value. We also managed to preserve this special feature during the wars caused by the breakup of socialist Yugoslavia, when we had been a safe shelter for a huge number of refugees from our neighborhood, Mr Brajović reminded.
- We are firmly convinced that the security architecture of the Western Balkans was inextricably linked to the EU and NATO, and therefore, in Montenegro, we see European and Euro-Atlantic integration as the best reform framework for achieving the standards of the most developed democracies, which would ensure our security and enable economic development, with the aim of improving quality of life of our citizens, President of the Parliament of Montenegro, Mr Ivan Brajović, pointed out.
- Parliamentary cooperation in the present form, at the level of parliamentary presidents, in addition to the fact that it paves the way for strengthening inter-parliamentary cooperation at all levels, can serve as a means of rapid response to current issues of particular importance for the countries of this region and our citizens. That is why sharing experiences is important, because no matter how close or far geographically we are located, we are part of a cultural European space that shares the same legacy and has the same problems. That is, in the end, our commitment to future generations to which we must leave a peaceful, stable and united Europe, President Brajović concluded.
