Mr Brajović: Undoubted determination of the region to become a part of the EU

President of the Parliament of Montenegro Mr Ivan Brajović, heading the delegation of the Parliament of Montenegro at the IV Session of the South-East European Cooperation Process (SEECP) in Zagreb, today had an address on the topic “Connection - Cooperation - Communication - the way forward”.

In addition to President Brajović, the delegation also includes MPs Mr Milorad Vuletić and Mr Radule Novović.

Mr Brajović said that what was in common for all our countries was their undoubted determination to become a part of the EU and to make efforts to address all the challenges on that path through reforms.

- We also understand that our European partners are going through the process of transformation, and they maybe have different priorities at this moment. However, it is important that we are all aware of the fact that vitality of any organisation depends on the freshness of ideas and new experiences, and that is something the enlargement process inevitably brings.”, estimated Mr Brajović.

He pointed out that through our conflicts, lack of understanding, through searching and preserving our identity and taking responsibility for our own destiny, we had seen that we depended on each other, that we were the closest to each other and that, no doubt, we had a minimum of common interests that could be implemented and thus we could have a unique voice when negotiating with the wider European region.

During the bilateral meeting with the Speaker of the Croatian Parliament Mr Gordan Jandroković, President Brajović welcomed the appointment of the interparliamentary Croatian-Montenegrin friendship group in January in the Croatian Parliament and assessed that strengthening of interparliamentary cooperation would give additional impulse to our, already excellent, bilateral relations.

- It is our obligation, as the elected representatives of the citizens, to daily strengthen mutual cooperation which, in today’s framework could also serve as a means of a rapid response to the current matters of special concern for the countries in this region and our citizens.”, said Mr Brajović.

Speaker of the Croatian Parliament, on behalf of all representatives of the Croatian Parliament, congratulated Montenegro on achievement of its big strategic goal, which was to join the NATO Alliance. He pointed out that Croatia would do everything on its side so that Montenegro could also become a member of the EU as soon as possible. After the meeting he said:

- I must voice great pleasure over today’s conversations. They confirmed excellent relations, friendly relations between Croatia and Montenegro. There is a mutual interest to improve these relations even more, to make them even better and more meaningful. I would like to especially emphasise that, on behalf of all representatives of the Croatian Parliament, I congratulated Montenegro on achievement of its big strategic goal, which is to join the NATO Alliance. At the same time, I offered cooperation and assistance of Croatia with regard to approximation of Montenegro to the European Union. Until recently we had negotiated, we have considerable experience and we want to assist in all segments in which the Montenegrin side believes that Croatia could assist, and of course, with regard to parliamentary cooperation, there we can make a large step forward and clarify to our colleagues and friends from Montenegrin Parliament how and what is best done in order to shorten the path towards the EU. Equally, with great pleasure, I have accepted the invitation to come to Montenegro. I hope that this will happen as soon as possible and we also wish that there be a more intensive cooperation between Croatian-Montenegrin friendship groups which exist in the Croatian Parliament and the Montenegrin Parliament, so I believe we will improve our relations there as well. We will do everything on our part so that Montenegro could become an EU member. In this process, forecasting the dates is a thankless task considering all the complexity of that process, but, as far as Croatia is concerned, we will do everything to make it as quick as possible and, if at all possible, we would be very happy if that were to happen during our presidency, said Mr Jandroković.
