The meeting was focused on Montenegro’s accession to and integration into NATO. In that context, the interlocutors stressed mutual satisfaction with the fact that Montenegro would soon become NATO member. Chairperson of the Security and Defence Committee Mr Obrad Mišo Stanišić expressed belief that Montenegro would be reliable and credible partner to the Alliance and thanked NATO partners for the support in reform of defence system, and activities aimed at destruction of surplus weapons.
NATO's Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe General Sir James Everard said that by joining NATO Montenegro would become not only a member of collective security system but also a member of the family whose relations were based on trust, cooperation and friendship. Mr Everard stressed that Montenegro was an important factor of stability in Balkans.
Member of the Committee Mr Vujica Lazović said that Montenegro’s membership of NATO was an issue of democratic development and stability of the country. He emphasised full devotion to the said aim from the very beginning of the Euro-Atlantic integration process, indicating to dedicated work in the field of military issues and reform of security sector.
At today’s meeting, which was also attended by Lieutenant General Ljubisa Jokic, Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces of Montenegro, the interlocutors concluded that NATO membership was also perspective of other countries in the Balkans.
