Meeting of Chairperson of the Committee on International Relations and Emigrants with Chinese Ambassador

Montenegro and the PR of China have exceptional interstate relations, characterised by the high level of political trust, this is a common assessment of Chairperson of the Committee on International Relations and Emigrants Mr Andrija Nikolić and Ambassador of the PR of China to Montenegro Mr Liu Jin.

The Chinese Ambassador thanked the Parliament of Montenegro and the Chairperson of the Committee on International Relations and Emigrants on their timely position, through which the State of Montenegro has distances from the recent visit of the three opposition MPs to Taiwan. Mr Liu Jin said that the Chinese side believed that this was an individual act not reflecting the position of the Parliament of Montenegro, which have always promoted the best relations of Montenegro and China.

Chairperson of the Committee on International Relations and Emigrants Mr Andrija Nikolić stressed that Beijing was an important foreign-policy address for Montenegro, and when it comes to Taiwan, for Montenegro “it is an integral part of unique China”. Mr Nikolić reiterated that the opposition parliamentarians did not have permission of the Montenegrin Parliament for their visit to Taiwan, so this group had no capacity to present the Parliament nor the state of Montenegro. According to Mr Nikolić, diplomatic impropriety by the three opposition MPs have made the major damage to themselves, because, aside from disrespect for the institutions of their own states, they have also permanently discredited their own place in any future international activity.

Mr Nikolić expressed his gratitude for the previous extensive international assistance and support to developmental projects, including currently the biggest strategic project - the construction of the Bar - Boljare Highway. He expressed expectation that Montenegro, as a NATO member state and a future member of the European Union, will be attractive to Chinese investors in the upcoming period as well. The Chairperson of the Committee assessed the parliamentary cooperation of Montenegro and the PR of China as particularly successful, bearing in mind that the visits have been exchanged at the highest level, the cooperation of the working bodies established and the fact that both legislatures have formed friendship groups.

The meeting also discussed the meaningful cooperation of the two countries at the local level, which significantly contributed to the improvement of infrastructure and the development of Montenegrin municipalities. The interlocutors expressed a clear readiness for the continuous development of concrete bilateral cooperation, with emphasis on the fields of education, science and culture.
