First joint meeting of the Security and Defence Committee and the Gender Equality Committee held

Report on the implementation of the 2017 Action Plan for the implementation of the Resolution 1325 of the United Nations Security Council – Women, Peace and Security (2017-2018) considered

At their First joint meeting held today, the Security and Defence Committee and the Gender Equality Committee have considered the Report on the implementation of the 2017 Action Plan for the implementation of the Resolution 1325 of the United Nations Security Council – Women, Peace and Security (2017-2018), adopted by the Government of Montenegro, which defines measures and activities for integrating gender equality issues into defence reform processes and at all  levels where policy is determined, created and implemented.

The implementation of activities from the Action Plan in 2017 proves the significant devotion of shareholders and their associated to fulfilling established goals and activities related to the Resolution SB 1325 and its accompanying resolutions, through the establishment of gender records and gender statistics, the continuous work on raising awareness of gender-based discrimination, violence against women and domestic violence, trafficking in human beings, with particular reference to begging, early marriages and labour exploitation, and the importance of education for the Roma and Egyptian population. Also, the importance of integrating gender perspectives into training programs for employees in the judiciary, defence and security system was highlighted through the implementation of activities, in particular through the education of persons in peacekeeping missions and operations in which Montenegro participates, as well as while preparing an officer for taking an office in a diplomatic-consular network.

Shareholders and their associated in charged of the Action plan are supposed to continue the implementation of the established aims and activities in 2018, thus contributing to the development of three key fields for the enforcement of the SC Resolution 1325: increasing women's participation in decision-making and peace processes, protecting women and girls in conflict zones, and integrating gender perspectives and gender education into peacekeeping operations, in order to provide a good basis for the preparation and drafting of the Second Action Plan for the period 2018-2022.

The meeting was attended by Mr Mihailo Volkov, General Director of the Human Resources Directorate at the Ministry of Defence, and Radmila Đakonović, Senior Adviser and Coordinator for Gender Equality at the Ministry of Defence.
