At today’s meeting of the Gender Equality Committee of the Parliament of Montenegro, a consultative hearing of Minister of Sustainable Development and Tourism Mr Pavle Radulović was held on the topic: “Monitoring the implementation of the 2030 National Strategy for Sustainable Development of Montenegro, in line with the SDG 5 of the Sustainable Development Strategy of the UN General Assembly from 2015”.
The 2030 Sustainable Development Strategy is a long-term development strategy of Montenegro setting out solutions for managing four groups of national resources: human, social, natural and economic, as a priority for the overall sustainable development of Montenegrin society. Montenegro has been one of the first countries in the world to fully embrace and integrate into its system the United Nations’ requirements set out in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development of the United Nations.
The SDG 5 Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls, aspires to achieving a set of concreate goals: eliminate all forms of violence against all women and girls in the public and private spheres, including trafficking and sexual and other types of exploitation; eliminate all harmful practices, such as child, early and
forced marriage and female genital mutilation; ensure women’s full and effective participation and equal opportunities for leadership at all levels of decision-making in political, economic, and public life; undertake reforms to give women equal rights to economic resources, as well as access to ownership and control over land and other forms of property, financial services, inheritance, and natural resources in accordance with national laws; enhance the use of enabling technology, in particular information and communications technology, to promote the empowerment of women; adopt and strengthen sound policies and enforceable legislation for the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls at all levels.
During the discussion, it was noted that it was necessary to consider all 17 SDGs from the aspect of gender equality, not only SDG 5, and that the Committee would deal with these issues in the forthcoming period.
Aside from members of the Committee, the meeting was attended by: Director of the Directorate for Climate Change and Mediterranean affairs at the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Tourism of Montenegro Mr Ešef Husić, Head of Department for Gender Equality Affairs at the Ministry of Human and Minority Rights Ms Biljana Pejović, President of the NGO "Montenegrin Women's Lobby" Ms Aida Petrović, Derector Executive of the SOS Hotline for Women and Children Victims of Violence Podgorica Ms Biljana Zeković, UNDP Gender Equality Project Manager Ms Kaća Đuričković, and Associate at the Department for Gender Equality Ms Aida Ibrahimović.
