At the Regional Conference on the role of parliaments in achieving the goals of sustainable development, Committee Chairperson, Ms Nada Drobnjak, actively participated in the work of the panel - "Representation, gender equality, openness and not leave anyone behind".
It was emphasised at the Conference that each country had an obligation to implement the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), to monitor progress, and regularly report to the global community about the results and challenges. A key element in the implementation of these goals is "nationalisation", which would take into account the specific needs of the citizens of a particular country, which would imply that, instead of applying a uniform approach, sustainable development goals were to implement and monitor, by applying indicators tailored to individual countries and their development plans and strategies.
The debate emphasised that parliaments played a key role and had a unique position in representing different geographical areas, social and ethnic groups, political attitudes and traditions. Each of the basic functions of the parliament: representative, legislative, budgetary and control could be efficiently used to provide support in the implementation of sustainable development goals. Therefore, the role of the parliaments is important in terms of strengthening the sense of commitment to these goals, as goals of national importance, thus contributing to faster progress on the path of development.
At the Global Conference on "Building citizens trust through openness and engagement", which is hosted by the Verkhovna Rada (Parliament of Ukraine), the question will be considered of how legislative openness could strengthen public confidence in representative institutions and build appropriate legislation for the 21st century. Also, the Conference will cover discussion on how parliaments could make best use of the new legislative engagement of the Open Government Partnership, in order to develop and apply legislative openness.
This Conference brought together high representatives of parliaments, governments and non-governmental organisations.
