President of the Parliament of Montenegro Mr Ivan Brajović and President of the House of Representatives of the Kingdom of Morocco Mr Habib El Malki today have signed a Protocol on Parliamentary Cooperation, creating thus the foundations for strengthening bilateral relations including cooperation between parliamentary working bodies, friendship groups, as well as between the staff of the two legislatures..
In their statements after the meeting, the two presidents said that Montenegro and Morocco shared the same values, being stability factors in their respective regions of the Western Balkans and North Africa. Regarding the migrant crisis, the interlocutors agreed that this issue must be a subject of serious consideration, whereby President Brajović presented the experience of Montenegro, which, a few decades ago, was a refuge for a large number of people from war-affected areas. The meeting discussed experiences with the EU and NATO, with a focus on further intensifying of parliamentary and economic cooperation of Montenegro and Morocco.
- Good political relations and visits at the highest level should result in boosted economic cooperation, in the interest of our citizens. I expect that this will be followed by a communication of our governments and that during our next meeting we will have a lot to be proud of - the progress in the field of tourism, renewable energy and ecology, President of the Parliament of Montenegro Mr Ivan Brajović said inter alia.
- We really appreciate Montenegro’s successes within its negotiations with the EU, and we have congratulated you on that. We support that process and we wish it to be completed successfully as soon as possible, just as we wholeheartedly welcomed Montenegro's membership in NATO. That is a sovereign decision that once again explains and confirms a special status, a special position of Montenegro and its role in preserving peace and stability in the Balkan region. For certain, the Protocol on Parliamentary Cooperation that we have just signed will result in strengthening of our relations. This is a young friendship, but it will be recorded in the historical ties between our nations, which have deep roots. It shows the extent to which we are turned to the future, precisely because of these common values that we share and which at the end of this meeting our friendship was also confirmed by our common desire to form the parliamentary friendship groups, both by Morocco and by Montenegro - President of the House of Representatives of the Kingdom of Morocco Mr Habib El Malki said.
The meeting with the President of the House of Representatives of the Kingdom of Morocco was attended by chairpersons of two parliamentary committees Mr Radule Novović and Mr Andrija Nikolić.
Presidents Brajović and El Maliki laid the wreath at the Monument of the Partisan Fighter, and they also visited a manifestation “Moroccan Week of Craftsmen”, being held on Trg nezavisnosti.
Visit of Mr Habib El Malki is the first official visit by a Moroccan statesperson to Montenegro. The Kingdom of Morocco was among the first countries to recognise Montenegro. This country has advanced status with the European Union, while successfully working with NATO within the Mediterranean Dialogue. President of the House of Representatives of the Kingdom of Morocco Mr Habib El Malki is, among other things, a member of the Academy of the Kingdom of Morocco, a professor of economics at the University of Mohammed V, the winner of the French Academy's Grand Francophone Medal and the winner of the French Legion of Honour.
