Importance of united Europe emphasised
Meeting of the Chairpersons of the Committees for Union Affairs of Parliaments of the EU – COSAC, which was organised in Sofia today, was marked by a discussion on priorities of the Presidency, the future of European Union, and the role of macro-regional EU strategies in sustainable development, stability and security.
The meeting was opened by Mr Kristian Vigenin, Chair of the Committee on European Affairs and Oversight of the European Funds of the Bulgarian Parliament, and the main focus of the meeting was to emphasise united Europe as the only solution for a strong Europe, ready to deal with current challenges. In this respect, it was pointed out that the unification of Europe has been based on the principles of joint action and consensus, leading to economic prosperity, social cohesion and security. However, the European Union pays great attention to the technological development sa well, focusing on devoting efforts to the common digital economy market, linking the education system to the needs of the market, which makes young people center of the priorities of the Bulgarian Presidency.
Within the first session, dedicated to the priorities of the presidency, the participants were addressed by Mr Adrijan Vuksanović, Chairperson of the Committee on European Integration. In his speech, Chairperson Vuksanović thanked European partners for the support that the EU has offered to Montenegro on its path to membership, which has been provided from various European addresses. Convinced that the membership of Montenegro in the EU depended on the individual merits of candidate countries, the Chairperson of the Committee expressed the expectation that the Enlargement Strategy for the Western Balkans, through clear guidelines, would contribute to and encourage the negotiation process, concluding that the integration process has been percieved in Montenegro more as an instrument for building a secure society, better standard of living and social security.
Member of the Committee on European Integration, Mr Nikola Rakočević, spoke about the future of the European Union. In his presentation, Mr Rakočević pointed out that, at the time of the current crisis, which the EU has been facing, it needed to show willingness to fight for competitiveness by encouraging the countries of the Western Balkans to become members as soon as possible. In addition, it is necessary that the candidate countries and Member States be prepared for solidarity and joint action.
In June 2018, the 59th COSAC Plenary Session will be held.
